What’s it all about?
Urban green spaces like our Croft are vital for both people and Nature. They provide food, wellbeing and beauty for us, while offering habitats for birds, bees, butterflies, wildflowers, and even less-loved creatures like slugs and spiders.
Through this project, funded by the Royal Society of Edinburgh and the Williamson Trust, we:

Explore and celebrate biodiversity on the Croft – from crops and wild plants to pollinators, birds, mammals and soil life. (According to Chris Packham on Springwatch, BBC 2, urban allotments are islands of exceptional biodiversity. Our unique system of group-shared plots, which is quite different from the allotment model, may well be even better, as our 2020 survey suggested!)

Use citizen science tools – user-friendly apps and guides help identify and record what we find.

Share discoveries – our results will inform how we manage our Croft for maximum biodiversity and contribute to a Scotland-wide guidance manual for urban green spaces
